Rudi Zygadlo

Tragicomedies

Planet µ • 2012

Rudi Zygadlo? Isn’t that the bloke from Glasgow, who brought the terms dubstep and songwriter together? Yep, that’s the one. His second record, »Tragicomedies«, is just the logical progression of his work, so far. His dubstep-roots are being put into the background more and more, and the songwriter-aspect gradually steps into the limelight. Which means: Lots of piano, lots of accordion, and generally quite a bit of singing. Experiments with bass-sounds and intense drums are hardly to be found anymore. What remains are the effects, developments and sequences from bass-music. The mix, which was also heard on the previous EP, leads to there being lots to discover on this record – it’s finally a kind of pop-music to appreciate! The songs are very similar to one another, not least because of the likeness in instrumentation – however, that doesn’t make the record any less enjoyable. The most listenable tracks have turned out to be »Melpomene«, »Black Rhinos« and »Catharine«. It’s very interesting to hear that »pop-music with dubstep-influences« does not need to sound as if some dude with a beard sings romantic tearjerkers on top of badly produced filter-bass-lines.
