Albumsi

Dekmantel • 2019

During the 2010s, Jan Schulte toured halfway around the world and collected their auditory diversity along the way: From Köllefornia to Copenhagen, from Barcelona to Bogota, from London to Lisbon, from Hamburg to Hanoi – and again and again Düsseldorf. Schulte’s Hometown is both spatially and musically the focal point of his cosmopolitan outlook, which sees African and Asian percussion as compatible with Balearic lightness as well as Dutch joy of experimentation. The DJ and globetrotter with a weakness for silly German-English puns has been known for a long time, at least in Europe. But at the very latest after he compiled the »Tropical Drums Of Germany« in Summer ’17 and one year later released the sparkling »Instrumentalmusik von der Mitte der World«, together with Niklas Wandt, Schultes exoticisms grooved even in the farthest corners of the southern hemisphere while slurping over colourfully illuminated counters near the beach. Hardly back in Nordrhein-Westfalen, he has now mixed them into a spirited »Albumsi«, which succeeds in almost all the moves a Bufiman with studio, gear and three to four days off per week can make so easy on over 90 minutes. A dozen of drum samples feel like drumming through the squeaky melody speckles in »Sara Sara«, refined by tenderly dreaming Italo pads. The sun rises, while the 13-minute »Pantasi« fans out everything even wider and further thanks to complete drumming. Not a second too long, the track brings fluent synths, whistles and chirps, the most delicate 80’s reverbs, wonderful harmonies and organically rearing repetition in perfect harmony. No less stunning is the sound design in the intoxicatingly creative three-part track »Slowly But Slowly / I Think I Got It Under Control Now / Well, Traumhaft«, along with super-dense textures, or “»Apo-Calypso«, which could turn any drifting village dissolute into a dream beach on Ibiza, even without sand. From beginning to end: Everything in flow, everything goes, nothing has to. When did local house music become so lavishly indulged without losing a single iota of style? Simply pure summer, without dot and comma.
