With »Indigo«, Flamingo Pier, consisting of DJs Luke Walker, Dominic Jones and Bradley Craig, release the successor to their self-titled EP from 2019, where the trio played the beach parties from Waiheke to the West Indies. Despite the cover artwork, “Indigo” takes place under the disco ball. Although the New Zealanders still prefer to play African percussion instruments like balafon and djembe, the disco impact is much stronger. Guitar, bass and vocals take up more space. Synthesizers fill up the rest. For reflection these four pieces were not produced. “Get me movin'”, it says mantra-like in »Jungle Groove«. Stoic beats run through the songs. In order to keep dancing uncomplicated, Flamingo Pier abstains from tempo changes within the songs. To keep the drum loops interesting, they play with the rhythms. In addition, the DJs brought numerous musicians into the studio. In »Boogie Meltdown« a xylophone can be heard, in »Tripping Up« a trumpet flashes out and in the title track the drum cymbal moves hectically to the music. In the course of the 22 minutes Flamingo Pier nevertheless remain true to the basic concept. At the expense of surprises this is a continuous pleasure.
