Asher Gamedze is an perennial traveller: born in Bristol, moved to South Africa after the end of apartheid, moved to Cape Town to study – and from there to the whole world. Gamedze not only tours with the medium Angel Bat Dawid or his South African friend, the Blue Note star Nduduzo Makhathini, but also as a solo artist and composer.

A Spiritual Experience
That’s one journey, and then there’s the spiritual journey that just won’t end. You can clearly hear this second journey on his records and in his live sessions – for example at the upcoming Enjoy Jazz Festival, where he will be playing live in Ludwigshafen on 27 October 2024. Asher Gamedze’s songs are wanderings through music history (as befits a historian), stopping off here at be-bop, there at fire music, before strolling on to free jazz – and sounding as fresh and unspent as if jazz had just been born.
