Past and present come together when the Artifacts Trio plays live in Mannheim

16.09.2024

Chicago, the windy city, is a never-ending source of jazz, from which musicians have been casting their eyes on this constantly reinventing music for literally 100 years, or have themselves contributed to reinventing it. Three of them can be heard in the Artifacts Trio. Three with legendary status. A supergroup, one would have to say, if all jazz bands in Chicago weren’t necessarily supergroups. But flautist Nicole Mitchell, cellist Tomeka Reid and drummer Mike Reed are luminaries in their field. They can be seen live on October 8, 2024 at the Alte Feuerwache in Mannheim as part of the Enjoy Jazz Festival 2024. Nicole Mitchell will also receive the Christian Broecking Award 2024, endowed with 10,000 euros, on this evening.

Ancient to the Future

The three are members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), even serving on the board from 2009 to 2011. They have also committed themselves musically to its motto »Ancient to the Future« by cultivating African-American culture and transporting it into the present. Their first album together as Artifacts from 2015 was peppered with cover versions by AACM members. Their latest album »…And Then There’s This« from 2022 also contains two cover versions by Muhal Richard Abrams and Roscoe Mitchell, also AACM legends, but is otherwise peppered with original compositions.
