Special Request

Hardcore EP

Houndstooth • 2013

Paul Woolford, who used to fulfill his ideas of House for Planet E., Hotflush Recordings or 20:20 Vision, is now striking a new path under the name of Special Request. The sound on his »Hardcore EP« sounds darker, coarser and it comes with two new tracks and two remixes. In the first track, »Wall to Wall«, he is most true to his Paul-Wollford-sound in terms of tempo and beats, even though he is already entering a new territory, in which the thicket’s crackling and creaking can become dangerous. On »Broken Dreams«, the second new creation, the producer from Leeds leaves his former path more forcefully, trying out influences of Jungle and Drum’n’Bass. In the preceding remix of »Mindwash«, Anthony Naples has already deconstructed the track into its utmost single bits and puts them back together, forming a new thicket of sounds, of which the inside is grumbling hazardously. It all reminds the listener of the great 555 Recordings releases from the beginning of the last decade. In the end, Lee Gamble comes forward with all his musicality in his remix of »Capsules« and provides for a detailed atmospheric depth of the sound-material. In 21 minutes and four tracks, we are offered a broad spectrum of musical variety which hardly ever leaves the listener bored.
