As the story goes, it was Carla Bozulich who introduced the members of Jane’s Addiction to one another, but that only tells us something about the social affiliation of the singer and songwriter from Los Angeles. Concerning her own activeness in that scene, she has played in the post-punk band Neon Veil, the industrial combo Ethyl Meatplow and in various other bands like Geraldine Fibbers and Scarnella. In 2003, she came up with her first solo-album, a re-adaptation of Willie Nelson’s »Red Headed Stranger«. From 2006 on, Carla Bozulich has released her music on Constellation (also under the name of Ecangelista) and has worked together with musicians like A Silver Mount Zion and Godspeed You! Black Emperor Both, her music and her lyrics, have always been gloomy, full of noise, ranging from melancholy to frightening, which is why her records are sometimes referred to as a collection of track-sketches rather than »real« tracks. In contrast to those releases, »Boy« almost sounds a little unspectacular. Instead of snippets from different sources of sounds and noise, her latest album is built on elements of blues, rock and country – and yet, it’s still an exciting one. Carly Bozulich’s voice is still as unique as ever, and, thankfully, she still doesn’t go completely without a certain kind of noisiness, supporting samples and an interesting and unkind kind of sound-processing. It might not be her best record – but it’s still first-league-material.
